The E-Myth Revisited is actually a business book that falls into the easy-to-read, easy- to-absorb, easy-to-put-into-action category of professional development books.

Written by Michael Gerber, himself a business owner (only take entrepreneurial advice from entrepreneurs!), The E-Myth Revisited is the revised edition of The E-Myth, a million-copy bestseller. I’d suggest reading the updated version – lots of new things based on our new environment and even more experience.

He feels my pain and can identify with what small business owners think and how they act as a result.

The Fatal Assumption of excited entrepreneurial start-ups is “if you understand the technical work of a business, you understand a business that does technical work.”

So, carpenters, electricians and plumbers become contractors.
A barber opens a barber shop.
The musician opens a music store.
The corporate PR professional opens his own PR firm.

They all think that by understanding the technical work of the business, they are immediately and eminently qualified to run a business that does that kind of work.
And it’s simply not true!

And so begins his discussion of three types of hats entrepreneurs think they must to be successful.

1) The Technician
2) The Manager
3) The Entrepreneur

This is the core of this fabulous book. He defines each title, asks you to explore your strengths, how you can play to those and leave the others to other people. He’ll challenge you to write a vision, discuss how to go from “working in your business” to “working on your business.”

It’s the best 200 or so pages I’ve read in a long time.

Be aware! This is not a book for close-minded business owners. By opening up to new ideas, taking a few risks and realizing that you can’t and, in fact, don’t want to do it all, your business will flourish!

The world is changing ever more rapidly, and the rules of marketing are no different, writes Godin, the field's reigning guru. The old ways-run-of-the-mill TV commercials, ads in the Wall Street Journal and so on-don't work like they used to, because such messages are so plentiful that consumers have tuned them out. This means you have to toss out everything you know and do something "remarkable" (the way a purple cow in a field of Guernseys would be remarkable) to have any effect at all, writes Godin (Permission Marketing; Unleashing the Ideavirus). He cites companies like HBO, Starbucks and JetBlue, all of which created new ways of doing old businesses and saw their brands sizzle as a result. Godin's style is punchy and irreverent, using short, sharp messages to drive his points home. As a result the book is fiery, but not entirely cohesive; at times it resembles a stream-of-consciousness monologue. Still, his wide-ranging advice-be outrageous, tell the truth, test the limits and never settle for just "very good"-is solid and timely.

Meet Fred.

In his powerful new book THE FRED FACTOR, motivational speaker Mark Sanborn recounts the true story of Fred, the mail carrier who passionately loves his job and who genuinely cares about the people he serves. Because of that, he is constantly going the extra mile handling the mail – and sometimes watching over the houses – of the people on his route, treating everyone he meets as a friend. Where others might see delivering mail as monotonous drudgery, Fred sees an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those he serves.

We’ve all encountered people like Fred in our lives. In THE FRED FACTOR, Mark Sanborn illuminates the simple steps each of us can take to transform our own lives from the ordinary – into the extraordinary. Sanborn, through stories about Fred and others like him, reveals the four basic principles that will help us bring fresh energy and creativity to our life and work: how to make a real difference everyday, how to become more successful by building strong relationships, how to create real value for others without spending a penny, and how to constantly reinvent yourself.

By following these principles, and by learning from and teaching other “Freds,” you, too, can excel in your career and make your life extraodinary. As Mark Sanborn makes clear, each of us has the potential be a Fred.THE FRED FACTOR shows you how.
